Speedway Willow Springs Is Ready To Light Up The Saturday Night Lights
By Dave Grayson
The Speedway Willow will be turning on the Saturday night lights while presenting another one of their action packed racing shows that has garnered them a lot of attention and positive comments, both from their racing teams and especially their fans. The always challenging quarter mile paved oval is located within the 600 acre plus motorsports complex known as the Willow Springs International Raceway.
Speedway Promoter Andy Daddario, and his staff, have once again created another full racing agenda that supports their mission of giving their fans more bang for their buck while maintaining an atmosphere of true entertainment for the entire family. On the racing agenda for Saturday night is a scheduled 248 laps of short track action spread out among six different racing divisions plus two special event races The racing will be led by the speedway's Elite Division with some strong support from the Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks, Skid Plates and the So Cal Enduro division. The aforementioned special events features an always fun flag pole race as well as an open comp figure 8 race. The first green flag of the evening will fall on all of this action at 6pm.
The Speedway Willow Springs employs a rather unique procedure for collecting championship points among its racing division. First, there are the traditional points made available from the finish order from a main event. However, under the system used by the speedway, there are a series of bonus points available based on driver's qualifying time, their finish at the conclusion of an eight lap heat race and there's even bonus points based on how many cars a driver passed during a main event feature. This system has two basic points scenarios. First, a highly consistent driver performance can create a comfortable lead in the championship ranking that will power the driver to a trophy at the end of the season. Secondly, a driver can use the bonus points to play catch up in the points and the division title run becomes too close to call heading into the final event of the season.
A perfect example of how this points system works can be found in the Hooper's Rear End Service Elite Division, a special Willow Springs division that allows Super Late Models, Late Models, Modifieds and trucks to race together under the auspice of one set of rules. In three starts so far this season, driver David Brandon has two, consecutive, feature wins, and a top five finish. Brandon's consistency in collecting the bonus points has him on top of the division standings with 70 points. Series veteran, and former track champion, Chris Peedan is ranked second with 48 points but collecting those bonus points could help eradicate Brandon's current lead. Rosamond driver Alex Anderson, who won the division's season opener back in March, is ranked third with 46 points.
In the Platinum Loan & Jewelry Street Stock standings driver Tony Forfa IV has been very busy keeping his family's racing legacy headed in the right direction. Forfa has a total of 76 points going into Saturday night's race based on two feature wins plus bonus points.
Fan favorite Bruce Secord, who won the season opener, is second in the standings with 50 points. Unfortunately, during last month's main event, Secord was caught up in a racing situation not of his making, that saw him take a hard hit into the retaining wall. Thankfully, the 71 year old driver didn't sustain any major injury except for the traditional soreness that often comes with a hard crash. The same could not said for his #35 Chevrolet which sustained major damage and will likely require a major rebuild situation. That situation, combined with a professional obligation at the Orange Show Speedway, means Secord will not be racing at Speedway Willow Springs this Saturday night. It also means that driver Justin Good, third in the standings with 38 points, will have an opportunity to move into second in the points.
The Wayne & Dave's Automotive Hobby Stocks championship run has raised an important question: who can stop driver Johnny Troesch? In three starts so far this season Troesch has three feature wins and 58 points. Brandon Fisk is ranked second with 41 points followed by Michael Williams with 35 points.
There's likely to be a change in leadership this Saturday night in the Lucas Oil Products Mini Stock points. John Dunlap, in his #68 Ford, won the season opener back in March and then turned the driving duties over to speedway veteran, and former track champion, Bobby Dezarov who responded with a main event in April and a top five finish in May which placed him at the top of the standings with 41 points.
However, due to a professional commitment to the Orange Show Speedway this Saturday, Dezarov will miss the race in Rosamond. In a recent Facebook post, Dunlap indicated that he and the car would also be missing the next race at Willow Springs. That could create an opportunity for driver Greg Didoha, second in the standings with 30 points, to take over the top spot.
It could also mean Ryan Bragdon could leap frog from third to first. The 2015 Irwindale Event Center Mini Stock champion made his debut appearance at Speedway Willow Springs and had a very big night for himself. He's a perfect example of how the speedway's bonus points program can work in a driver's favor. Because it was his 2016 debut, Bragdon began the evening at the bottom of the list with zero points. He left the speedway third in the standings with 24 points after winning the main event while collecting bonus points from every category available. It's not clear at this point what this driver's plans are regarding this coming Saturday night.
Dont over look the fact that Dezarov's calendar, after this Saturday night, will be free and clear to return to the #68 mini stock for the remainder of the season and he will be looking to return to the top of the championship standings.
In The Tire Store Skid Plates division Jon Carter, winner of the May 14th race, is the division's leader with 50 points. However Daniel Chadwick, a feature winner back on April 16th, is only eight behind in second. Mike Howard is third in the standings with 39 points.
One of the major highlights of Speedway Willow Springs' 2016 season has been the So Cal Enduro division. The division's car count has been extremely healthy, they have a rock solid sponsorship program and the racing action has kept the fans on their feet during their main events. Enduro racing this Saturday night is being sponsored by Meinerts Industrial and DRC Pump Systems.
Going into Saturday night Jake Basham, after winning the May 14th feature, is on top of the championship standings with 46 points. However, drivers Randy Hannah and Pete Chilbes, tied for second are only six points behind the leader. Michael Walters holds down fourth just ten points from the top of the standings.
This success of this program is a tribute to the vision and hard work from series Promoter Danny Quinn who has done an excellent job of creating and developing this exciting program over the past year and a half. Quinn employs a variety of formats for each of his races. This Saturday night he's planning a traditional old school race for his teams. The Enduro cars will be running twin six lap heat races that will determine the starting line up for the 40 lap feature race. If you're not familiar with this style of racing then treat yourself this Saturday night. It's well worth the trip to Rosamond and the price of admission.
Speaking of the price of admission, a ten dollar bill, at the front gate of the Willow Springs complex, will buy you a wrist band that will allow you access to see all of the racing, at all of their tracks, on both Saturday and Sunday. Children age eight and under will be admitted free.
A perfect example is the sports car racing you can see on the 2.5 mile, nine turn, road course known as Big Willow. The Lucky Dog Racing League will be presenting one of their famed endurance events. The Ultra Chiller Willow Springs Desert Dash will begin on Saturday, from 9am to 530pm, and conclude on Sunday from 9am to 3pm. You can use your wrist band on Saturday to take in some of this action and then, later in the day, make a very short drive to Speedway Willow Springs to enjoy some exciting stock car racing on the quarter mile paved oval. Plus, you still have the option of returning on Sunday to see more sports car action.
This is why the Willow Springs International Raceway is regarded as being one of the most fan friendly motor sports complexes in the country. It's also just one of many reasons why this facility is such a commercial success that dates back to 1953.
Racing at Speedway Willow Springs is presented by a highly potent, and much appreciated, group of sponsors that includes: A To Z Signs, Abadak, Adams Metalizing & Grinding, Angel's Touch Towing, Benz Sanitation, Deist Safety, Dezarov's Mobile Auto Service, Dominguez Mexican Restaurant, 51 Fifty Energy Drink, Frank's Radios, High Desert Cellars, Hooper's Rear End Service, KGG Electric, K&N Performance Filters, Linny White's Race Shop, Lucas Oil Products Inc, Misfit Motorsports, Pinnacle Peak Steak House in Colton & San Dimas, Platinum Loan & Jewelry in Lancaster, Scramblez, Street Customs, Studio Equipment Rentals, 10,000 RPM, The Tire Store and Wayne & Dave's Automotive.
Warf Take Royal Purple #8 To Victory In Salt Lake City

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (June 2, 2016) – Meridian, ID's Bryan Warf made the most of a fill in opportunity on Monday, taking the #8 Royal Purple / Learnport Beast Rex Hutchison Chevrolet to victory with the Orchex King of the Wing Western Sprintcar Series. The victory at Rocky Mountain Raceway in Salt Lake City, UT came after driver Dylan Hutchison was unable to compete due to a hand injury unrelated to racing.
Warf came on board with Glenn Hutchison Racing after sitting behind Rex Hutchison Racing Engines-powered Sprint Cars throughout his career. Warf usually drives the #91 for Pat Russell that will be in action in this weekend's Diamond Cup at Meridian, ID.
20 Western Sprintcars were in action for the series' debut at the 3/8ths mile high banked oval. Warf wasted little time getting up to speed in the All Valley Towing-sponsored car by leading both practices. A 13.074 second lap at 103.258 mph in qualifying placed Warf third in time trials. After running second in his heat race it was time for the 30 lap feature.
Warf pushed off from the fifth position and immediately leapt past Lonnie Adamson for fourth on the opening lap and points leader Eric Humphries a lap later. Warf overhauled both TJ Thorne and Ryan Burdett on lap two to take the lead on lap three. He lowered his best lap at the facility down to a 13.070 second lap on lap 23 of the feature.
The .647 second victory for Warf goes along with a third place finish and a heat win for Dylan Hutchison in the series points opener at Madera on March 19th. Glenn Hutchison and car #8 now rank second in the owners points for the Orchex King of the Wing Western Sprintcar Series. Dylan Hutchison is expected to also miss the June 11th "Madera Western Super Sprints" event with a replacement driver to be announced soon.
Royal Purple is based in Porter, Texas and produces a wide range of high performance lubricants for nearly every consumer and industrial application. Royal Purple’s sole mission is to develop products that significantly outperform other synthetic and mineral based oils. It is considered by many to be the best synthetic motor oil in the world.
Round #1 of the King of the Wing Western Sprints airs on MAVTV on Thursday night June 9th at 5 p.m. Pacific / 8 p.m. Eastern Time as part of the "Madera Racing" motorsports show. The event will be paired with the inaugural race for the Jr. Late Model division in an hour long broadcast.

Pacific Challenge Series Returns To Shasta Speedway
Via PCS Media/Blakesley Sports Media
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (June 1, 2016) - For the first time since 2013, the Pacific Challenge Series presented by PenneyLawyers.com will hit the 3/8ths mile Shasta Speedway in Anderson, CA on Saturday. A large field of local drivers and touring stars will go head-to-head in one of the premier races on the 2016 Super Late Model series' calendar. The last four previous Pacific Challenge Series champions will all be in action for one of the toughest fields so far this season.
Roseville, CA's Eric Schmidt is arguably the most accomplished driver at Shasta in the last 20 years with multiple fall Open Show wins and PCS wins at the venue. Schmidt swept all four PCS events at Shasta in 2013 en route to the series championship. The driver of the Sierra Speed #05 is fresh off of both the track record and win in last Saturday's Tri-Holiday Classic at Stockton 99 Speedway as well.
"Shasta's a really cool race track. It doesn't have a lot of grip but it has a lot of character," Schmidt said. "The fans up there are great. The pits are probably the best pits we go to on our series. All the fast guys will be there so it'll be awesome!"
2016 series points leader Jeremy Doss of Upperlake, CA finished second in his all-time series debut at the track in late 2011. His win at the speedway in 2012 was part of his eight victories that year for the series championship. Doss finished third at Stockton to enjoy an 18 point lead over teammate Jeff Bischofberger of Tracy, CA.
Anderson's Ryan Peeples is one of the leading local drivers that will be taking on the series veterans on Saturday. Peeples has two top-tens in three PCS Shasta starts and also finished ninth at Roseville earlier this year.
"It is a great series and a great track that creates a lot of excitement," Peeples said. "There is a lot of character to that track. A LOT! It is just a great facility. We're just hoping to come out and give (the fans) a good show."
Other local drivers expected include Anderson's Derek Copeland, Redding's James Johns and Jason Mitchell.
2014 PCS champion Mike Beeler of Modesto, CA ranks third in the 2016 standings with a pair of second place finishes and a fifth place finish in his last three starts. Factoring in his 17th place finish at the season-opener in Madera as a likely throwaway race makes Beeler one of the championship contenders as he makes his first Shasta PCS start.
Loomis' Chris Scribner had run in the top-six in all three races leading into Stockton last Saturday night before a hard crash on the final lap derailed his season. Rounding out the top-five in the points is Manteca's JR Courage despite missing the Roseville race.
Hayward's Danny Malfatti, Granite Bay's Cole Moore, Madera winner Jacob Gomes, Valley Springs' Tracy Bolin, and Lodi's Matt Wendt round out the top-ten. 2015 PCS champion John Moore is 11th in the standings. Other drivers expected on Saturday night include Elk Grove's Mike Hite, Idaho's Travis Milburn, Upperlake's Jimmy Stillman, Modesto's Kyle Gottula, Roseville's Shannon Mansch, and Cloverdale's Todd Lands.
Local Legends join the action for the fifth race where Legends have shared the card with the PCS. Pete Pierce won the Legends race at Stockton last weekend. Local Late Models, Bombers, and Hornets round out the card.
Friday night practice will see gates open at noon with practice from 3 p.m. - dark for $30 per pit pass. Saturday pit gates open at noon. Car and driver entry for the PCS is $100 while all other pit passes are $30. Adult general admission tickets are only $5 if purchased in advance through the fairgrounds or $7.50 at the gate

Knight returns to Acres winner’s circle
By Matthew J. Sullivan
It was O’Reilly Auto Parts Night at the Races this past Sunday afternoon at Redwood Acres Raceway. Sunshine graced the 3/8-mile paved oval for what proved to be another intense night of action. While the local late model division had the night off, the five other regular classes of cars were joined by the North State Modified Series cars.
The Legends were joined by a few out-of-town drivers this week. Brian Kamisky set fast time with a 18.098 qualifying lap. Kamisky followed his quick time with a win in the trophy dash while Robert Miller took the heat race victory. The original field of eight was cut short a car in the feature as Derek Copeland was unable to start the 25-lap race. Brent Mack led the opening three laps before Miller took over the lead.
Danny Hadler, Jr. was all over Miller’s bumper for the majority of the race but in the late stages it appeared as though Kamisky’s car came to life. Kamisky moved by Hadler to second on lap 20 and looked as though he was ready to give Miller a serious challenge for the race lead. Unfortunately, Kamisky got loose and spun in turns three and four. Miller was able to hold off Hadler’s final charge to claim his first Legend feature win. Kamisky took third over Mack and Brad Curtice.
Quick time in the California State & Federal Employee Credit Union roadrunner class was a 20.839 by Steve Paiment. Tyler Peach took the victory in the trophy dash. The heat race winners were Shawn Molloy and Paiment. The 20-lap feature proved to be a rough race from the drop of the green flag. Several cars got together right at the flag with Molloy getting the worst of it. He was out of action for the rest of the race.
Because of the numerous caution flags, the event was cut down to 16 laps. The finish came down to a battle between Richard Stancliff, Bob Ratzlaff, Dominic Vogelsang and Paiment. Vogelsang led the white flag lap but Paiment was able to get by and win the race to the checkered flag completing a perfect night. Ratzlaff beat Vogelsang for second followed by Standcliff and Bethany Rapp.
James Moore was the quick qualifier for the Fortuna Wheel & Brake bombers with a lap of 18.333. Visiting driver, Erick Ray took the wins in both the trophy dash and heat races. Jimmy Sorrels was unable to start the 25-lap main event which featured a fantastic duel between Ray and Tyler Avelar. The two traded the lead back and forth through the first 14 laps before Avelar was able to take the lead for good. Nobody had anything for Avelar on the night and at the finish it was Avelar taking the win followed by Ray, Moore and John Lally.
Qualifying for the Humboldt Hydroponics mini stocks was led by Gary Klinetobe who set the fast lap of 18.843. Rick Estes won the four-lap trophy dash. Heat race one was taken by Brian Murrell, Jr. Behind him, the cars of Jordon Paiment and Michael Lawrence got together resulting in both drivers being unable to return to the track for the night. Estes took the win in heat two.
Brett Murrell led the opening four laps of the 25-lap main before giving way to Jarrett Mayo who led for two circuits. Estes looked to be the man to beat as he got to the lead on lap seven. Behind him, Eugene Palmer showed his strength and got to second. Estes and Palmer staged a thrilling duel for the race lead with Estes appearing to have the stronger vehicle of the two.
On the final lap, Palmer tried one last ditch effort in turns three and four to get by Estes. Unfortunately, the two tangled with Estes spinning into the infield dirt. Although Palmer crossed the line first, he was penalized for his involvement in the incident. This gave Mayo the win, his second of the year. Rookie, Daniel Buell took second over Brian Murrell, Sr. in third. Estes was scored fourth while Palmer placed fifth.
Robbie Nelson set the place in qualifying for the Thunder Roadsters with a 17.221 lap. Aaron Byers took the trophy dash victory while Ronnie O’Neil won the heat race. After winning the main event in the previous race, Byers suffered issues in the first lap as he hit the turn one wall hard. Fortunately he was okay.
Donnie Brown led lap one by it proved to be O’Neil’s night as he took the lead on lap two and never looked back. Tommy Payne was O’Neil’s closest challenger but the veteran driver lost ground as he battled Nelson the majority of the race. At the finish it was O’Neil winning his first ever Thunder Roadster main event. Payne took second over LeRoy Marsh, Jr., Nelson and Brown.
The North State Modified Series visited Redwood Acres Raceway for the first of two times in 2016. 15 modifieds showed up but 13 qualified as Charlie Collins and Michael Mitchell both suffered issues that ended their day prematurely. Darrin Knight set fast time with a 16.184 lap. The $100 Lucas Oil Dash For Cash prize was won by Jay Lindstroth while Richie Potts took the $50 that came for second place.
Guy Young took the lead from the start of the Swartz Diesel Nor-Cal 60. Young pulled out to a tremendous lead while the faster qualifiers of Knight and Lindstroth maneuvered their way to the front. By lap 24, Knight was in the lead. On lap 28, Lindstroth moved to second.
There were only two caution flags in the race, one of which involved David Lyndall in turn three on lap 43. Lindstroth was able to hang on to Knight’s bumper on the restarts but Knight’s car prevailed as the laps went on. At the finish, it was Knight winning by a little over a second over Lindstroth. Bryan Denton started dead last and was able to finish third while Young and Mike Collins rouded out the top five finishers.
Racing at Redwood Acres Raceway goes on a two week break before returning Saturday June 11th for Humboldt Motorsports Night at the Races. The Mid-City Motor World late models will return to the track to join the other five local classes of cars. As always, the grandstands will open at 5:00 PM while racing begins at 6:30 PM. Herzog Among Big Winners On Armed Forces Tribute Night
Via Madera Speedway PR/Blakesley Sports media
MADERA, CALIFORNIA (May 30, 2016) – 13 year-old Austin Herzog solidified his position as one of the top young stock car drivers in the nation, with a thrilling win during Armed Forces Tribute Night Saturday night at Loanmart Madera Speedway. Herzog charged from the rear of the field of MAVTV 51FIFTY Jr. Late Models for drivers ages 10-16, making the decisive pass for the lead on lap 47 of the 50 lap feature. The win is Herzog's second in the series in three races so far.
Matt Erickson remained perfect on the season winning his third MAVTV-televised Open Late Model main and fifth overall for the year as well in the 100 lap contest.
Herzog set fast-time and sat on the pole over the 15 car turn out but had to restart at the rear after having a missing gas cap. While Herzog went to work from the back, it was Las Vegas' 12 year-old driver Dezel West leading the opening laps. West and 15 year-old Ryan Vargas of La Mirada, CA anchored the field with a gap back to third place Canadian Ben Silliker in a train of six cars for third.
Seth Holman and Jesse Burks had hard contact mid-pack that forced Holman to escape to the pits followed by Las Vegas' Kyle Keller spinning on the front stretch for a caution on lap 12. Kolby Berry and another Las Vegas driver Chris Trickle, nephew of Dick Trickle, came together to send both of those 15 year-olds to the back as well.
Herzog made some of the first outside passes in the history of the MAVTV-televised series on Saturday night. He made his way past round two winner Austin Edwards for fifth as the race reached the lap 25 break.
After a ten minute break on the front stretch, the action picked back up with Herzog clearing Jarrett Gilmer for fourth. Trickle continued his run through the field as well to get past Edwards. Silliker maintained third until he was passed by Herzog on lap 31 in turn three, and coming out of turn four Silliker banged doors with Gilmer. Gilmer was bumped back to sixth and Silliker to eighth in a tough break for the former Micro Sprint racers.
Vargas ran comfortably in second until both Herzog and Trickle got around him near the 35th lap of the race. Edwards took advantage to close in hard on Vargas for fourth. Edwards managed to get past Vargas to take the position a few laps later.
The action intensified up front as Herzog closed on West for the lead. The fans roared in approval as Herzog made a big cross-over maneuver to take the lead. The turn four pass on lap 46 was enough as Herzog went on for a .624 second win for his second of the season. Trickle, Edwards, Vargas, Gilmer, Silliker, Kolby Berry, and Idaho's Zachary Telford rounded out the lead lap finishers.
Matt Erickson led the final 73 laps of the two part Loanmart Open Late Model 100 to continue a perfect 5-0 season at Madera including three televised wins. Erickson wrestled the lead away from 15 year-old Logan Zampa on lap 27 and then fended off a strong challenge from 2015 runner-up Bryan Herzog at the conclusion of the tough race.
Glen Cook led from the green flag with Joey Licata on the outside front row. A caution for contact on lap two saw Erickson already up to second after starting fifth. Erickson slid around from the outside line on the restart to surrender positions to Licata and Zampa before the next caution as Thomas Suarez had rear end problems. Incoming third in points David Ross slowed with a right front problem in turn four on the successive restart in an incident that ultimately derailed his night, putting him many laps down. Erickson capitalized to take the lead from Cook on lap eight.
Zampa battled side-by-side with Cook for nine laps before finally clearing him and squaring up at Erickson. The top eight cars maintained a strong lead over the rest of the pack despite a lot of side-by-side racing. A lap 22 caution involving Loren Kutz and Ryan Hart set up the hard charge from Zampa where he took the lead from Erickson on lap 23. Ryan Philpott had a small spin in turn four that caused a few others to spin as well in a precursor to incidents yet to come.
Over a series of restarts Erickson took the lead back from Zampa on lap 27 which he would ultimately never relinquish. Zampa, Licata, and Cook staged a constant battle for second until the race was halted at lap 37 for Philpott losing an engine in turn one. The ensuing pileup ended the night for Dillon Tucker, Tyler Herzog, Rick Thompson, and Howard Holden.
After a break for Twisted Tea Modified racing, the second segment was much cleaner with 63 laps left to run. Bryan Herzog started making his presence felt at the halfway point challenging for second place with the outside line coming in. Herzog took over second from Zampa but Licata took it from him on lap 55.
Jason Aguirre staged a nice battle with Cook for fifth while the racing continued to heat up at the front. Herzog and Licata got physical for second place with Herzog taking over the position as Licata bounced off of the backstretch gate.
After a lap 81 caution the chase was on between Erickson and Herzog. Herzog closed in on lap 94, jumping inside Erickson in turn three with the pair making contact in a fan-pleasing duel. Erickson was able to drive away by a few car lengths and hang on for the win. Licata ran third to unofficially take second in the points while Zampa and a late-charging Ryan Hart rounded out the top-five over Cook, Trevor Schlundt, Dominic Lopez in a career-best eighth, and rookies Kyle Fortney and Shelden Cooper.
Rookie Jackson Dukes won an exciting 20 lapper for the California Mini Cups. Dukes broke out to the early lead in the field made up of five rookies and two second-year drivers. "LIL" Bruce Bivens went upside down for a surprising red flag crash in turn four on the eighth lap of the feature. Bivens walked away after some assistance from the safety crew at Madera Speedway.
The final 12 laps were a duel between the rookie Dukes and the veterans Adam Lemke and Joshua Terry as the only three remaining cars running.
Lemke tried to close in during the final two laps but it wasn't enough as Dukes took the popular win ahead of Lemke and Terry.
Napa's PJ Pedroncelli made the most of his second start for the Twisted Tea Modifieds in claiming the 40 lap main event. All seven competitors on hand intend to race in the upcoming "Lucas Oil Summertime Horsepower Nationals" at Madera in either the Lucas Oil or North State Modified divisions. The nationals will be June 11th with MAVTV televising both the Lucas Oil and Western Winged Sprints.
The third round of the series was led early by Robbie "The Kid" Knittel over Camino's Scot Alves. Pedroncelli emerged in second on lap 13. The duel between Knittel and Pedroncelli ended up on lap 29 when Knittel's car darted to the left in turn three hard into the wall. His night was done and Pedroncelli led the final 11 laps without contest over Alves, Sacramento's Eric Price, Brian Collins, and Elliot Sterjne. Knittel should remain the series points leader despite the crash.
The Loanmart Madera Speedway is dark before returning on June 11th for the Lucas Oil Summertime Horsepower Nationals with a wide-range of open wheel thunder on the fastest 1/3rd mile in the west. More details are available at www.RaceMadera.com

Eric Schmidt Gets Long Awaited Stockton PCS Win
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA (May 28, 2016) - Former Stockton 99 Speedway track champion Eric Schmidt won his first Pacific Challenge Series race at the venue, claiming the 100 lap Tri-Holiday Classic #1 on Saturday night. The Roseville, CA driver is also a 2013 PCS champion and made the winning move on lap 96 at the quarter-mile paved oval.
Schmidt's win on the 68 year old historic speedway was a popular one and came in a fast-paced night where the top-eight cars broke the track record. Schmidt led that effort with a 13.291 second lap around the high-banked speedway.
Schmidt had to come from seventh on the grid after finishing in seventh in the American Racer Tire dash earlier in the night. It was Ross Strmiska and Cole Moore leading the 20 car Super Late Model field down to green with a third- and a second-generation Stockton 99 regulars on the front row.
Strmiska led the opening 45 laps of the race with his new black, pink, and gold Dodge Challenger with Moore in tow. By one fifth race distance the pair maintained a strong lead over 2015 SRL Champion Jacob Gomes in third. Gomes took over second position from Moore on lap 42. Gomes then passed Strmiska for the top-spot on lap 46.
Schmidt emerged into the top-five with 30 laps left to go and chipped his way through the top-five while Gomes enjoyed a commanding lead. With ten laps to go Schmidt got around Moore and looked to challenge Gomes. A late race incident involving Strmiska and Wendt set up the battle with Schmidt getting past Gomes on lap 96 to take the victory. The top-five at the stripe were Schmidt, Gomes, points leader Jeremy Doss from eighth starting position, Moore, and 2014 PCS champion Mike Beeler in his typical late race charge.
Doss was the races' hard charger while the Brakeometer prize for the fourth place finisher went to Cole Moore. The Pacific Challenge Series continues a back-to-back stretch of races on Saturday night June 4th when they hit Anderson, CA and Shasta Speedway. This will be the first points paying appearance for the tour since 2013 for the fast 3/8ths mile oval.
