SRL Makes Changes To Move Forward

SRL Media

Bakersfield, CA – Starting in 2016, the SRL will no longer sanction the SRL Legends, or SRL S2 Tour Series. The focus of the SRL will now be solely directed at the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series and special events like the Winter Showdown.

“We’ve enjoyed having the Legends and S2 series under our banner,” stated the SRL’s Larry Collins. “With the current growth of the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series and the opportunities to put on events like our Winter Showdown, we had to adjust our focus and our energies.”

2015 was the first year the SRL presented the Winter Showdown. The nationally televised $130,000 Super Late Model event held at Kern County Raceway Park was a huge success in its first year, with over 60 Super Late Model entries from across the nation.

“Our background is promoting events,” stated Collins, whose family owned and operated Mesa Marin Raceway, a half-mile paved oval in Bakersfield for 30 years. “If we’re going to create and present events like the Winter Showdown, we’re going to give it maximum effort to insure it’s a success for everyone involved. With that being said, we had to make some changes that would allow us the time and energy necessary to put on events of this size and stature.”

The founders of the S2 concept, Tim Huddleston and Jeff Schrader will take over and rebrand the S2’s as Racecar Factory Spec Late Models in 2016, with a complete schedule of events. The new Racecar Factory Spec Late Models can be reached at WWW.RCFSpeclatemodels.com and Info@RCFSpeclatemodels.com or call Tim Huddleston at (818) 674-0930 or Jeff Schrader at (626) 256-3322 for more info regarding the new series.

In regards to the legends, Chris Carli and his ‘Legends of the Pacific’ series will insure that legends racing will continue to thrive in our region.

The next event for the SRL is the upcoming Winter Showdown, February 27th and 28th at Kern County Raceway Park. The first official event of the year for the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series will be April 9th at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Orange Show Speedway Releases A Very Exciting 2016 Season Schedule

Dave Grayson

The Orange Show Speedway, OSS, recently released what appears to be a very exciting 2016 season schedule guaranteed to provide a wide variety of racing action for their ever growing legion of race fans. The historic quarter mile paved oval is located within the National Orange Show Fairgrounds in San Bernardino-California. The new racing season officially kicks off on the evening of April 9th and continues until November 5th.

The speedway's Open Late Models and Street Stocks will be two of the major lynch pins of the new OSS schedule. Each division will be making 11 appearances in 2016. The Open Late Models will be treating their fans to 50 lap main events. The lone exception to the lap distance will be the evening of September 4th: the night of the Third Annual Open Late Model 100.

The Street Stocks regular season appearances will feature 30 lap main events. However, they will also be featured on their very own special night, October 15th, with they treat their fans to the Third Annual Street Stock 200.

In still more exciting news, from the new schedule announcement, is the fact that the OSS will be adding a brand new, full time, racing division this season. Those thunder making, ground shaking, OSS Modifieds will treat the speedway's fans to eight appearances this year running 40 lap main events on each night.

Modified racing will also become a major headliner at the OSS on the evening of August 20th when the extremely popular Lucas Oil Modified Racing Series, presented by Loan Mart, comes to town to run one of their always exciting 100 lap features. A true major boon to the OSS from this race is the fact that The Lucas Oil Modified Racing Series will be bringing the element of national television with them. The Lucas Oil Production Studios will be at the speedway that night to record the race for a future airing on the Lucas Oil owned MAV TV. It's also expected that promotions and highlights will also be broadcast, supporting this event, on the recently launched Lucas Oil (Dot) TV.

The long time fan favorite Mini Stocks will be making nine OSS appearances running 25 lap events. Fans will also be treated to eight evenings featuring the youngsters in their small, but very swift, Bandolero cars also running 25 lap mains. The always fun Barber Pole races are scheduled four times this year.

For decades the OSS has frequently treated their fans to top shelf style figure 8 racing and that tradition will continue in 2016 when the Outlaw Figure 8 division makes six scheduled appearances. The division will be headliner for the November 5th season ending event when the OSS presents the Third Annual West Coast Figure 8 Championship, featuring a very intense 300 laps of racing the eight excitement.

When the new schedule was released, the fans were pleasantly surprised to see a very special evening on it. That would be a May 21st visit from the highly acclaimed NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, which is the long time driver development series used to pave the way to opportunities for young drivers to participate in NASCAR's three national touring division including the Sprint Cup. The K&N West will be treating the fans to 150 laps of excitement on this evening during the course of their first appearance at the track since 1978. This event is also a second opportunity for the OSS to benefit from the exposure of national television. The NBC Sports Network will be on hand that night to record the race for a future national broadcast.

All of this OSS excitement is being brought to you by speedway Promoter Rod Proctor and his outstanding staff from HRP: Hot Rod Productions. The group will be officially launching their third season this year and are widely regarded for saving racing at the OSS upon their arrival. The historic track ran its first race back in May of 1947. Some very prominent drivers have crossed the start-finish line over the years including the likes of open wheel racing's A J Foyt and Troy Ruttman, NASCAR West Series champions Herschel McGriff and Jack McCoy along with NASCAR champions Kevin Harvick and Ron Hornaday Jr just to name a few.

However, it appeared that the racing string was about to run out and that's when Proctor and HRP decided to step up, lease the track, and keep the Saturday night lights on. While Proctor was new to the world of promoting racing, he does have some impressive stats on his personal resume that helped out a lot in the process. He's the proprietor of a extremely successful family owned restaurant known as The Green Onion that specializes in Mexican cuisine. That indicates that he is very familiar with the process of dealing with the bottom line that comes with the creation of a very successful business enterprise. Secondly, Proctor has the heart and soul of a racer and is a championship driver in Outlaw Figure 8 racing. That indicates that he fully understands the full process of maintaining a race team and is familiar with the hard work and expenses that come with it.

From the very beginning, Proctor knew that he had to make the OSS budget friendly for both his race teams and the fans who came to see them. He contacted the Kanapolis- North Carolina based Towel City Tires and made them the official tire of the OSS. These tires retail at the track for $90, and often last approximately100 high speed laps, which was a huge improvement over the other major name brands of racing tires that retailed for around $150 each and didn't have anywhere near the lap longevity.

Next, turning his attention to the fans, Proctor lowered general admission ticket prices, age 13 to adult, to $8. Tickets for seniors and kids, age six to 12, are $6 while kids age five and under along with active duty military are admitted free. The track also lowered prices at their concession to make an OSS evening even more budget friendly.

The stage is now set for season number 68 which begins with a series for open practice sessions set for the evenings of March 12th, 19th, 26th and April 2nd. Then on April 9th the fun starts featuring racing from the Open Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Bandoleros, Outlaw Figure 8's and the Barber Pole race.

Winter Racing Heats Up This Saturday At The Havasu 95 Speedway

Dave Grayson

The Havasu 95 Speedway will open its gates Saturday afternoon for the latest round of its 2015-2016 winter racing season. The famed quarter mile paved oval is located within the Sara Park complex in beautiful Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Saturday's race has been dubbed "Full Of Hot Air Night" in honor of the community's annual Hot Air Balloon Festival. The speedway's management and staff is encouraging patrons to enjoy the festival early in the day and then come to the speedway to take in some red hot racing. Race day at the Havasu 95 Speedway is being sponsored by the Horizon Community Bank. The Saturday racing is a daytime event. The spectator gates will open at 12pm with the track going hot and green at 2pm.

Providing a full day of Havasu 95 style red hot racing will be the Late Models, running twin 50 lap main events, the Get It In Gear Street Stocks, the Bandoleros, running twin 20 lap mains, along with the Sam Nichols Electric Factory Stock, who will be racing on the dirt infield, and the Maintenance Solutions Team Factory Stocks.

The speedway's Late Model division will be making their second appearance of the season so their points standings are based on that first race back on November 28th. Nick Joanides won the feature that night and is now on top of the championship standing with 100 points. Lining up behind him are drivers Jeff Peterson, Trevor Huddleston, Brandon Lovelock and Bobby Keirns. The top five are separated by only eight points and twin 50 lap mains could shake up these standings.

The Get It Gear Street Stocks will be making their sixth appearance of the season on Saturday with the lingering question: what is it going to take to beat Gavin Bucy? This driver has won the last five main events in a row and is so hot it's a wonder his right racing shoe hasn't caught on fire. Making this racing situation even more interesting is the fact that speedway veteran Bobby Keirns has logged five consecutive second place finishes and is only ten points behind Bucy in the division's championship standings. There is also the element of time involved here. The Street Stocks will race just five more main events between January 2nd and April 2nd meaning Keirns needs to make a move on Bucy starting this Saturday.

The Sam Nichols Electric Factory Stocks will be making their fifth appearance of the season this Saturday. This division also raises a special question: what is it going to take to beat driver Brent Delay? This Factory Stock hot shoe has four consecutive wins and 200 points. Jose Guevara is ranked second in the standings with four top five finishes as 190 points. Jeff Prieur holds down third, with 180 points, based on a consistent four top fives. Making their racing interesting is the fact that they will be racing slideways on the dirt infield this Saturday afternoon and that could become a factor in the points standings.

The Maintenance Solutions Team Factory Stocks is a concept that requires three rotating drivers with at least one of them having to be a lady. This division will be making its fourth appearance of the season this Saturday afternoon. Team Take and Bake is currently on top of the championship standings with 146 points based on two feature wins and a third place finish. However, they are are only eight points ahead of EWWWWEEEE Racing and the Asphalt Junkies who are tied for second.

The youngsters in their small, but very fast, Bandoleros will be making their second appearance of the season and will be, once again, running twin main events on Saturday. Allison Gay won both main events back on January 2nd and leads the standings with 100 points. The trio of Brock Rogers, Ethan Deguevara and Madison Gay are tied for second just eight points behind the leader.

General admission tickets are $12 for age 17 to adult and $10 for seniors, military personnel and the handicapped. Kids tickets, age six to 16, are $6. Lake Havau Unified School District students can receive a one dollar discount by presenting their school IDs at the ticket gate. Kids five and under will be admitted free. The speedway also offers a budget friendly family pack that admits two adults and two kids for $25. Fans can also enjoy the amenities of the VIP section for $25 which includes pizza and the best seats in the house. Advance tickets, always a good idea for this speedway, can be purchased from Peggy Gerchman at Peggy's Sunrise Café located at 1584 Countryshire Avenue.

For out of town race teams and fans, the Quality Inn and Suites is the official motel of the Havasu 95 Speedway. Located at 271 South Lake Havasu Avenue, they offer beautiful and spacious rooms at affordable rates. Call 1-928-655-1111 for reservations which can also be made on line.
