Late Model Action Heats Up Madera Speedway This Weekend

#88 Joey Iest won his first career Jr. Late Model feature on April 6th (Jason Wedehase photo)

Via Madera Speedway Media

MADERA, CALIFORNIA (April 23, 2019) – The sizzling start to the 2019 MAVTV-televised Nut Up Pro Late Model Series and 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr. Late Model Series continues on Saturday night from Madera Speedway, with both divisions hosting their third races of the season. Allied Storage and Containers will present a busy night of racing.

The Pro and Jr. combined season average has attracted 50 Late Model stock cars to the one-third mile asphalt oval each night. Mini Cups vs. Bandoleros, Hobby Stocks, and Toyota Sedans will also be competing this weekend.

The Pro Late Model division has been led by a pair of Jr. Late Model graduates to start the year. 15 year-old Dylan Zampa, a three-time winner of the Jr. Series hailing out of Napa, CA, won the season opener and leads the championship. Six-time Jr. winner Austin Herzog, age 16 from Clovis, CA, won the second round of the series for his first Madera Pro Late Model win. Both drivers were busy throughout April. Zampa tested for Lee Faulk Racing Development in a Late Model Stock Car at Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina. Herzog added a victory in the non-televised Madera Late Models division last weekend as well.

2018 series champion Matt Erickson finds himself in unfamiliar territory from third in the standings on the heels of a runner-up finish to Herzog in the last event. 2018 Madera Late Model champion Jason Aguirre ranks fourth ahead of sophomore driver Christian Roche. 80 laps of competition are on tap for the Pro LM with $2,000 going to the race winner.

Las Vegas’ Tanner Reif, 13, enjoys a narrow three-point advantage ahead of Madera’s own Joey Iest in the 51FIFTY Jr. Late Model competition. Reif grabbed opening night in March ahead of Iest before Iest outdueled Reif in a thrilling second round of the series. Remarkably, Reif has six consecutive fast-times in the division going back to July of 2018.

Bakersfield’s Seth Wise has led a large rookie class with a pair of third place finishes to rank third in the standings. Jay Juleson and Kabe McClenny round out the championship top-five. 22 different drivers from across the western United States have competed thus far in 2019 for the series for drivers ages 10-16. Their feature on Saturday will be 70 laps in distance.

The Mini Cups vs. Bandoleros is a race within a race and the Bandolero portion of their opener was won by Ethan Nascimento. The victory was Ethan’s first win in the series and gives him the points lead ahead of his teammate, the 2018 champion Riley Massey. Drivers from both north and south of Madera are challenging for the Bandolero championship this year. Atwater’s Aiden Phillips topped the Mini Cup field on his birthday as well. Madera’s youngest drivers will race for 20 laps on Saturday.

Madera’s Hobby Stock drivers are fresh off a great race with the new North State Hobby Stock Series on April 13th where Howard Holden scored a lucrative $750 victory. The race did not pay track points, however, with the track championship still led by Steve Schermerhorn. Schermerhorn will try to go 3-0 for the year on Saturday. In Toyota Sedans, Jason Lawton has won all four main events this year.

Action gets started on Friday evening with practice from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Saturday’s program begins with pit gates opening at 12:30 p.m. Practices run from 2:15 – 3:45 p.m. with qualifying and heat races to follow. The first set of main events starts at 5:00 p.m. including the Mini Cup feature and the Late Model B Main. Opening ceremonies are at 6:00 p.m.

Tickets for this great night of racing are just $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $7 for youth ages 6-12, and kids five and under are free!

Round Two Of Madera MAVTV Late Model Action This Saturday

Via Madera Speedway Media

MADERA, CALIFORNIA (April 2, 2019) – A pair of talented teenagers will try to defend their opening night victories when the MAVTV-televised Late Model divisions continue on Saturday at Madera Speedway. 15 year-old Dylan Zampa of Napa won his Nut Up Pro Late Model debut in March while Las Vegas’ Tanner Reif, 13, scored the 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr. Late Model series victory. Both victories were rain shortened affairs on the one-third mile asphalt oval, with drivers staring down full length action this weekend.

80 laps are scheduled for the Pro Late Models while the Jr. Late Models will be in action for 70 laps. They are joined by Mini Cups vs. Bandoleros, Modified Super Toyotas, and Toyota Sedans for a full evening of motorsports entertainment.

Zampa’s triumph to open the year was a narrow one over his older brother Logan. They swapped the lead multiple times during a side-by-side battle that lasted more than ten laps. Dylan cleared Logan on lap 49 before the caution fell and the race ended prematurely due to weather.

A trio of top contenders in 2019 were waiting in the wings when the race ended. Defending champion Matt Erickson, 2018 Madera Late Model champion Jason Aguirre, and six-time Jr. Late Model winner Austin Herzog will be among those trying to improve their fortunes to challenge the Zampas at the front of the pack. The Zampa brothers will look to add Saturday’s $2,000 feature to their recent haul of $16,500, including Logan’s win in last October’s Short Track Shootout.

The 51FIFTY Jr. Late Models for drivers ages 10-16 years old attracted a strong 20 car field for their opener. Early action was dominated by new drivers such as Riverside’s Cody Kiemele and Bakersfield’s Seth Wise.

Las Vegas’ Tanner Reif, who finished third in the 2018 championship, found his way to the front for the opening victory with Madera’s hometown driver Joey Iest running second. Both drivers have established themselves as championship favorites while Bakersfield’s Kabe McClenny had a strong start with a fourth place finish. Wise led all rookies from third with fellow Bakersfield driver Kercie Jung finishing sixth.

Mini Cups vs. Bandoleros will open their 2019 season on Saturday after they were unable to race on opening night. The Bandolero portion of the field has grown substantially to include a mix of Northern California and Southern California drivers. The Mini Cup side also features several rookie drivers. Madera’s youngest drivers race for 20 laps in a “race within a race” format where points and trophies are decided separately by class.

Both of Madera’s regular entry level divisions, the Modified Super Toyotas and Toyota Sedans have two points races in the books in 2019. Jason Lawton has claimed victory in both Sedan races so far by comfortable margins. Andrew Davidson and Greg Tyler round out the top-three in the points.

In Modified Super Toyotas, Shaun Reynolds has a win and a second place finish to lead the points over former track champions Ryan Reynolds and Bert Stephens. Both Toyota divisions will stage 25 lap features this weekend.

Action gets started on Friday evening with practice from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Saturday’s program begins with pit gates opening at 11:00 a.m. Practices run from 1:15 – 2:55 p.m. with qualifying and heat races to follow.

Madera Winner Dylan Zampa Grabs Attention Of Racing Industry

Dylan Zampa won the Madera $5,000 to win Speed Fest (Jason Wedehase photos)

MADERA, CALIFORNIA (March 11, 2019) – With the MAVTV cameras rolling, Dylan Zampa put the West Coast stock car racing world on notice by winning his debut in the Nut Up Pro Late Model Series on Saturday night. The 15 year-old has attracted national attention, outdueling his older brother Logan for the $5,000 win.

The Napa High School freshman won a marketing partnership with McAllister Precision Marketing as part of a contingency program from his 2018 51FIFTY Jr. Late Model campaign. Zampa finished runner-up in that championship before advancing into the Madera Pro Late Models this season, one of the largest and most competitive Pro Late Model divisions in the country.

This morning he appeared on the Speed51.com Morning Bullring live to talk about the win and his racing career.

“It was life changing to win at Madera,” Zampa told Bob Dillner of Speed51.com “Kenny Shepherd has put so much work into getting the (Nut Up) series out there. On the final restart, (Logan) picked the outside of me and we raced side-by-side for 10, 15 laps. He made a mistake going into turn three and coming out of turn four he drove really high.”

“I’ve been racing for nine or ten years and I’m super devoted. It’s the only thing I want to do. I work on the race car almost every day of the week. It’s very special. I was super excited and ready to take on the challenge with the big guys. It was very emotional for me and my dad. We were both speechless.”

Zampa joins the growing list of drivers who have shown next level talent during the first four years of the Jr. Late Model program. The series for drivers ages 10-16 years old debuted in 2016.

“We’re so proud of the success from our Jr. drivers. This is what we envisioned with this training program,” Madera promoter Kenny Shepherd said. “Dylan looks like the fourth in line already from this program that has what it takes to compete on a national level.”

Among those who have competed in the Jr. Late Model program is Hailie Deegan, the only female winner in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West. Jesse Love, winner of both the 2017 and 2018 Jr. Late Model championship, will compete in a variety of series in 2019 including the POWRI Midgets for Keith Kunz Motorsports. He will also be racing in the SRL Southwest Tour, Winged Sprint Cars, and the MAVTV-televised Madera BCRA Midgets on pavement. 2018 Nut Up Pro Late Model Rooke of the Year Adam Lemke competes for JR Motorsports in the CARS Tour this year as well.

Zampa’s 2019 Nut Up Pro Late Model efforts continue with eight more races. The series competes again on April 6th with an 80 lap feature. Zampa will also test for Lee Faulk Racing in April. Pro Late Model competition continues into October with the $10,000 to win Short Track Shootout on October 5th.

Dylan Zampa Strikes Speed Fest Gold With $5,000 Pro Late Model Win At Madera

Via Madera Speedway Media

MADERA, CALIFORNIA (March 9, 2019) – 14 year-old Dylan Zampa of Napa, CA made his Nut Up Pro Late Model debut on Saturday night and promptly scored the biggest win of his career, topping his 18 year-old brother for the $5,000 Speed Fest at Madera Speedway. The pair went side-by-side over a dramatic final ten laps for MAVTV cameras before wet weather ended the event prematurely. Tanner Reif scored a shortened opener for the 51FIFTY Jr. Late Models that attracted 20 drivers ages 10-16 years old as well. Both the Mini Cups vs. Bandoleros and Modified Super Toyotas were unable to run their features.

A grinding crash for the lead between Carlos Vieira and Blaine Rocha on lap 39 opened the door wide-open for the Zampa battle. Fast-time qualifier Vieira and Rocha slid off of turn four with Rocha spinning across the track into the inside wall with significant damage. Vieira drove away from the crash but with portions of Rocha’s nose piece lodged into his car. He was relegated to the rear for having it removed by officials.

Rocha had led all the way after starting outside Orange Show champion Parker Malone on the front row of the 26 car feature. More than 30 cars attempted to qualify, with the field narrowed by a b-main earlier in the afternoon.

Dylan Zampa, the runner-up in the 2018 51FIFTY Jr. Late Models, slowly negotiated his way to second after starting sixth. The first caution flew on lap 18 for a spin. The caution flew again on lap 21 for Ryan Hart spinning and dropping fluid in turn one. Rocha picked the inside line against Zampa, pinning him into the dry sweep at the top of the first corner.

Through a series of mid-race cautions, Rocha continually maintained the lead over the rookie. A significant crash slowed the festivities when 2007 Altamont champion Ryan Philpott hit the turn one gate head on. He was uninjured and racing resumed after a brief red flag for clean up.

Zampa spun his tires on a lap 36 restart, which allowed the tenth starting Vieira to shoot the gap up into second. Vieira immediately clamped down on Rocha. Two laps later they slid through turn four before Rocha was hooked and hit the inside wall backwards.

The incident thrust Dylan Zampa into the lead, picking the inside against Logan Zampa. They staged a side-by-side battle over the next 10 laps with multiple lead changes. Logan led lap 39, before Dylan led lap 40. Logan edged forward for lap 41 but Dylan managed to lead until lap 45. Logan swung wide in turn four and Dylan danced to a one car length advantage up to lap 49.

Dylan’s advantage was nullified by a caution for Malone spinning out of turn four. The race never restarted as a heavy sprinkle saw officials count caution laps to carry the race to lap 56 just past halfway. The halfway break began before the sprinkle turned into persistent rain showers to end the evening. Dylan Zampa hauled in his $5,000 Speed Fest victory with 2018 Short Track Shootout $10,000 winner Logan Zampa in second.

2018 Madera Late Model champion Jason Aguirre was third over two-time champion Buddy Shepherd and 13th starting Ross Strmiska. Vieira ranked 14th in the rundown in a slight hit to his 2019 championship hopes.

13 year-old Tanner Reif of Las Vegas won his second career 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr. Late Model Series race with a late race maneuver to take the shortened victory. 20 drivers ages 10-16 years old took the green flag for MAVTV-televised action.

12 year-old Cody Kiemele from Riverside swept around Jay Juleson to lead lap one. The caution flew immediately for a brief spin in turn three. Juleson looked pinned to the outside on the restart with a line of strong cars attempting to overhaul him including Bakersfield’s Seth Wise. A caution on lap six for a stalled car gave Juelson a break from the battling.

Madera’s Joey Iest rocketed from fourth to second on the restart when Juleson was slow to get away. Iest tucked under Kiemele before Kiemele spun to surrender the lead and bring out the caution.

Iest took over the point with Tyler Reif advancing to second after starting sixth. Iest and Reif built up a five car length lead over the pack but then Reif suffered a solo spin in turn three. The pack of mostly rookie drivers all managed to avoid Reif’s stalled car.

Tanner Reif used these restarts to charge past both Wise and Juleson to get up into second. His brother spun again on lap 25 which allowed Tanner an opening to challenge Iest. Iest held off this attempt that included Reif sliding sideways off of turn four and nearly going around. He saved it and then was saved by a caution period. This next restart was Iest’s undoing with Reif taking the lead on lap 30.

A caution on lap 32 for Tyler Reif having another unfortunate spin set up the final restart of the event. Tanner Reif motored away from Joey Iest for a .187 second advantage with Wise, Kabe McClenny, and Kayla Eshleman the top-five. The lap 41 checkered flag was intended to be the halfway break, but the race never restarted due to weather.

The MAVTV-televised Nut Up Pro Late Models and 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr. Late Models return on April 6th. Next up for Madera Speedway is Saturday night’s debut of the MAVTV-televised California Challenge Cup for steel bodied stock cars along with the new Madera Midget Series.

2019 Madera Speedway Season Begins Saturday With Large Field Of MAVTV Late Models

Joey Iest is among those searching for their first Jr. Late Model win on Saturday (Jason Wedehase photo)

MADERA, CALIFORNIA (March 5, 2019) – Madera Speedway’s fifth season of MAVTV-televised Late Model action begins Saturday night, as drivers get ready to lay the wood for nine race championship campaigns in the Nut Up Pro Late Model Series and 51FIFTY Jr. Late Model Series. Saturday’s Madera Speed Fest includes the Pro Late Models battling for 100 laps and $5,000 to win, while the Jr. Late Models will race for 70 laps. Mini Cups vs. Bandoleros and Modified Super Toyotas round out the card on the one-third mile asphalt oval.

A very healthy field of competitors are expected to try to challenge Matt Erickson in the Pro Late Models in 2019. Erickson opened his 2018 championship campaign by winning the $5,000 season opener and followed it with three more victories to add to his extensive Madera resume.

Six-time Jr. Late Model winner Austin Herzog of Clovis scored three fast-times and a pair of runner-up finishes to finish second in the championship. Garland Tyler and Ryan Hart were third and fourth in the standings. Rounding out the top-five of 2018 was Racin Vernon of Bakersfield who won twice and added two fast-times as well. Vernon is one of many drivers utilizing a new car with an Outlaw-style body this season.

2018 Jr. Late Model runner-up Dylan Zampa, 14, will advance to the Pro Late Model series to compete alongside his older brother Logan Zampa, winner of the $10,000 Short Track Shootout last season. Both drivers are utilizing new Outlaw Late Model style bodies on their machines.

USAC’s all-time winningest female Toni Briedinger will begin a full-time Pro Late Model campaign hailing out of Hillsborough, CA for Naake-Klauer Motorsports as well.

A bevy of drivers will be part of the substantial field on Saturday night, with two-time series champion Buddy Shepherd, three-time PCS winner Carlos Vieira, Madera race winners Rick Thompson and Blaine Rocha, Madera Late Model champion Jason Aguirre, Altamont champion Ryan Philpott, Nut Up Industries teammates Ross Strmiska and Christian Roche, and many others expected to compete.

Visiting drivers set to appear include 2009 Roseville and 2018 PCS champion Jason Romero and nearly half a dozen Orange Show Speedway regulars including champions Linny White, Parker Malone, and Barry Karr.

With two-time 51FIFTY Jr. Late Model champion Jesse Love graduating into touring Late Models, Sprint Cars, and Midgets in 2019, the championship battle is wide-open this season. Several drivers appear poised to fill the gap with Las Vegas brothers Tyler and Tanner Reif among the returning crop. The older Tanner Reif narrowly missed out on the championship on the strength of a victory in August. Tyler finished fourth in the standings with a photo-finish win in July over his older brother. The victory made him the youngest winner in series history.

The rookie crop of Jr. Late Model drivers will include Portland, OR’s Jadan Walbridge from Outlaw Kart racing, Bandolero and Legends standouts Kercie Jung and Seth Wise from Bakersfield, Yakima, WA’s Patrick Mullins, and off-road champion Jake Bollman. Bollman will take over the #38 season vacated by Love.

Returning drivers to the division include fifth in 2018 points Kabe McClenny, inaugural season winner Austin Edwards, Madera’s Joey Iest, San Jose’s Jay Juleson, Lilly Mead, and Olivia Manke.

The Mini Cup vs. Bandolero drivers will face off with a new crop of drivers from a variety of backgrounds looking to knock Bakersfield’s Riley Massey off her championship pedestal. Several Mini Cup teams have moved into the more powerful Bandolero cars, adding to the intrigue. The youngest drivers at Madera Speedway compete in a 20 lap feature on Saturday.

Modified Super Toyotas continue to be anchored by the twin bothers of Shaun and Ryan Reynolds. They look to continue that momentum in Saturday’s opener with 30 laps on tap for the main event.

Action gets started on Friday evening with practice from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. Saturday’s program begins with pit gates opening at 11:00 a.m. Practices run from 1:00 – 2:45 p.m. with qualifying and heat races to follow. The first set of main events starts at 5:15 p.m. including the Mini Cup feature and the Late Model B Main. Opening ceremonies are at 6:00 p.m.

Tickets for this great night of racing are just $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $7 for youth ages 6-12, and kids five and under are free!

Erickson Closes In On Championship With Thrilling Madera Win

MADERA, CALIFORNIA (September 22, 2018) – Two of the most dramatic finishes of 2018 came during the penultimate rounds of the 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr. Late Model Series and the RPM Mortgage Pro Late Model Series on Saturday night at Madera Speedway. When the smoke cleared, Dylan Zampa and Matt Erickson emerged with critical victories in their runs for the championships.

For Erickson and the Pro Late Model drivers, they are staring down the upcoming $10,000 to win Nut Industries Short Track Shootout on October 6th.

13 year-old Jesse Love started the Pro Late Model feature from the pole position for their 80 lap affair, but Modesto’s Garland Tyler swooped past him on the outside to take the lead. Love was undeterred, fighting back on the inside to take the lead back on lap five. Erickson followed suit to take second place while sixth starting Austin Herzog, the incoming second in points, was up to fourth on lap 14.

Erickson closed down on Love by lap 18 and used the lapped traffic to box Love, taking over the lead on lap 24. Nick Grossi spun in turn four on lap 32 for the first caution with Loren Kutz collected as well.

When action resumed, Racin Vernon dove to the pits with a blown engine while Love had to retire with failing brakes. April winner Blaine Rocha and Ross Strmiska battled for fourth with Strmiska staying on the high-side for several laps.

A multi-car melee on the backstretch saw Howard Holden and Jarrett Gilmer both suffer significant damage on lap 37. Herzog knifed up into second on the restart and ran on top of Erickson nose-to-tail when they reached the lap 50 break. Tyler, Strmiska, and Rocha rounded out the top-five.

Strmiska took over third coming out of the break. Tyler fell into the clutches of a very strong battle with Rocha and Aguirre where they fanned out nearly three-wide on more than half a dozen occasions. The battle lasted for 15 laps until the next caution.

Jack Wood spun on lap 65 for the yellow flag and Strmiska tried to take second away from Herzog on the restart. Strmiska grabbed the position by lap 70 but Herzog edged back underneath him.

Herzog had second by a nose at the stripe on lap 75 when the caution came out for Gilmer and Kutz stopped on the front stretch. Herzog tried to capitalize on the following restart but Erickson drove away, before another caution on lap 76 for Tyler Herzog spinning.

Herzog drove up alongside Erickson for a side-by-side run to the finish. The pair got tight coming to the white flag, backing Herzog into Strmiska down the front stretch. Herzog spun and tagged Strmiska, sending Strmiska’s car hard into the turn one wall. The race was ended on a yellow checkered flag with Matt Erickson taking the $2,000 victory ahead of Rocha, 15th starting Dillon Tucker, Aguirre, and Logan Zampa. Herzog was unofficially credited with a distant 14th place in the final rundown.

The 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr. Late Model finish was similarly spectacular, with cars sliding across the finish line backwards. In the end, Dylan Zampa was credited with the narrowest of victories by .017 seconds over a spinning Tanner Reif.

Joey Iest started the 70 lap race for drivers ages 10-16 from the pole position, but was immediately passed by his teammate Jesse Love. The move was nullified by a caution, but Love, the 2017 champion, made the move again on the next attempt. Dylan Zampa followed him past Iest with the top-two in the points occupying the top-two on the race track.

A significant crash on lap four brought out a red flag when Calvin Hegje and Hailey Liles bounced off the front stretch wall. Both drivers were uninjured. Major crashes continued on lap 16 when Tyler Reif climbed over the top of Iest’s driver’s side door on a restart, with both cars eliminated from contention.

Zampa kept applying pressure to Love with the pair running closely across the line at the lap 40 break while Las Vegas’ Tanner Reif up to third at that point as well.

Kabe McClenny tried a few times to get around Reif for third before Reif solidly joined the battling up front in the closing stages. Reif applied a bump and run to take second from Zampa on lap 49 and a caution on lap 54 set up the battling to the checkered flag. Reif made contact with Love, allowing Zampa to go from third to first in one corner. Reif and Love traded contact again before Reif muscled back into second.

On the final lap, Reif made contact with Zampa down the backstretch and stayed engaged on his bumper as he pushed him into turn three. He attempted to slide up in front of Zampa in turn four and the pair made contact, sending Reif spinning. Zampa and Reif crossed the stripe nearly equal – Reif backwards and Zampa forwards. The MAVTV cameras caught Zampa ahead as did the transponders in one of the wildest finishes in series history. Love watched it all unfold from third with McClenny fourth and Jay Juleson fifth in his debut.

The Mini Cups vs. Bandoleros had a tension-filled evening as well, with their 20 lap event fraught with spins and crashes. The most notable incident came when Bandolero points leader Riley Massey and her teammate Ethan Nascimento tagged each other on the front stretch sending Massey hard into the wall. Bakersfield’s Hank Hall, age 10, went on to win the overall and the Bando portion of the event while Mini Cup points leader Kale McClenny was victorious yet again among those cars.

Jillaun Holden won the 2018 Toyota Sedan championship to add to her 2016 crown, finishing second in Saturday’s race behind Jason Lawton. A spin on lap 22 brought the field together but Lawton motored away over the final three laps. Kyle Labrie overcame the spin to finish third.

Modified Super Toyotas were led by the Reynolds 1-2 punch, with Ryan leading 21 laps for the win while Shaun worked his way past both 2017 champion Bert Stephens and John McCullum Jr. to take second. Patrick Geiger ended up working past them to finish third as well.

Rocha Claims First Career Pro LM Win At Madera

MADERA, CALIFORNIA (April 28, 2018) – A full moon and tight track conditions led to a wild night at Madera Speedway for round #3 of the MAVTV-televised Late Model racing. Blaine Rocha claimed his first career RPM Mortgage Pro Late Model 80 lap feature. Rocha led the final 12 circuits for the win while Dylan Zampa won his second 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr. Late Model race on Saturday as well.

Bakersfield’s Racin Vernon was perfect all weekend, leading both practice sessions and taking the fast-time in qualifying. Vernon continued the good luck when he drew the pole position in the redraw as well. Vernon started alongside fellow Bakersfield racer Jacob Smith, with Vernon taking off with the lead. Smith’s run slowed early as he was spun by Glen Cook into turn one on the second lap, with the spin leading to Logan Zampa suffering significant front end damage. Austin Herzog and Adam Lemke also had to pit for repairs.

Vernon led the opening three laps before Rocha took over for laps four through six. A caution on lap seven came out when incoming points leader Matt Erickson spun and both Christian Roche and Zampa grabbed some damage in the melee. Vernon took over the lead on the restart and proceeded to pick the outside line the rest of the evening on restarts.

Rick Thompson had advanced from 13th to seventh by that point and continued to move forward as the race saw four more incidents before lap 31, when Quintin Harris stopped in turn three with right front damage. Erickson stalled on the front stretch and was out of the race with an apparent problem on the left rear.

Garland Tyler and Jack Wood began their duel for third on the restart in a battle that would continue on for many laps throughout the feature. Herzog emerged into the top five before the halfway break as well.

Vernon led Rocha across the line at the lap 40 break while Tyler led Wood by a nose with Herzog fifth. After a break for adjustments and MAVTV interviews, the second half resumed with Vernon driving away while Herzog took over fourth from Tyler. Rocha remained on Vernon’s bumper as the top-two ran around the outside of the race track. Herzog took up the battling with Wood for third position before the punctuation mark of the race on lap 58. Vernon spun on his own entering turn one to surrender the lead and force the second half’s only caution flag.

Rocha took advantage, assuming the lead and driving away from Wood on the restart. Herzog never relented and got around Wood for second with six laps remaining. Rocha drove to victory by five car lengths over Herzog and Wood. Adam Lemke charged back to pass Garland Tyler for fourth as well.

With Erickson failing to finish, Herzog assumes the points lead before the upcoming Military Tribute Night on May 26th.

The drivers ages 10-16 years old in the 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr. Late Models had a dynamic 70 laps as well. Jesse Love IV, winner of round #2 and the 2017 champion, looked poised for victory before a grinding crash ended his efforts.

Love qualified fastest and started on the outside pole alongside 2018 points leader Tanner Reif. The first caution flew on lap five for Olivia Manke spun out in turn four. The caution flew again on lap 13 when Anthony Guiamano spun in turn two from the fourth position. Love picked the inside of Reif on each successive restart attempt. Las Vegas’ Tyler Reif spun in turn one on lap 16 and Manke suffered hard contact with both Kyler Berry and the outside wall to end her evening.

Dylan Zampa aimed inside Tanner Reif for second place before spinning as he tried to go three wide underneath a lapped car. Kayla Eshleman swooped around Austin Edwards to take third while Jesse Love led Reif into the lap 40 scheduled break.

Racing resumed with 30 laps to go and saw a large crash end the day for several cars. Reif edged forward on Love coming to green. Heading into turn one, Love and Eshleman made contact sending Love up the hill into Reif. Reif spun and the field scrambled. The resulting incident saw Love have a brief fire as he hit the backstretch wall, with Guimano spun around backwards into the wall as well. Reif, Love, and Guiamano were all done for the night.

Eshleman was relegated to the rear of the field with third year driver Austin Edwards assuming the lead. Zampa moved inside Kabe McClenny for second quickly. Four laps later, Zampa took the lead from Edwards and started to stare down his second win.

Eshleman knifed through the pack to challenge McClenny for third with Tyler Reif in the mix as well. Reif moved past them both and closed down on Edwards for second. Reif spun on his own after taking second on lap 66, setting up a four lap run to the finish. Zampa motored away to victory with Eshleman inheriting second when Edwards faltered with a flat tire. Kyler Berry completed a great comeback to finish third in his second televised start. Wastonville’s Lilly Mead managed to get past Kabe McClenny for fourth as well.

Bakersfield’s drivers continued their perfect record in the Mini Cup vs. Bandoleros series, but it was a new young lady taking the helm of the Bando class. Riley Massey overcame a mid-race penalty to charge to victory. Massey used her horsepower in the larger Bando car to advance from fifth after the inversion. She went straight to the lead over a pack of four Mini Cup cars before the field made it to turn one at the start. Massey held that lead until the first caution when she was penalized for jumping the start.

Kale McClenny won the first two Mini Cup races and assumed the overall lead as well before Massey made her move forward. Massey drove away to a comfortable Bandolero victory while McClenny was part of a great Mini Cup race with Aaron Thomas. The duo went side-by-side across the finish line with McClenny taking his third Mini Cup win by just .005 seconds. Joseph Holliday rounded out the Mini Cup top-three while Zachary Ginn of Bakersfield finished second in the Bando class.

Joshua Whitfield made his triumphant return to the Hobby Stock division by taking the 30 lap feature as he drove away from Thomas Suarez. Steve Schermerhorn rounded out the top-three.

2016 Toyota Sedans champion Jillaun Holden recovered from an early spin to get her third Toyota Sedan victory of the season and extended her points lead in the process. A caution with two laps to go for Kyle Labre spinning set up a thrilling finish. Rookie Greg Tyler made a valiant effort to jump to Holden’s outside coming to the line. Holden held on by a scant .007 seconds with Tim Curtis debuting a new car for a third place finish.

Erickson Snares $5,000 Madera Season Opener on MAVTV

MADERA, CALIFORNIA (March 10, 2018) – Under threatening skies, 2016 Madera Speedway champion Matt Erickson won Saturday’s $5,000 to win opener for the RPM Mortgage Pro Late Model Series. The race was reduced to 80 laps with no scheduled breaks. The format produced a barnburner from start-to-finish with nearly a dozen lead changes across three different race leaders. Dylan Zampa won his first career 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr. Late Model race as well in the busy afternoon.

A noontime matinee show on the fastest one-third mile in the West opened with a B Main where Jason Romero of El Dorado Hills led the transferring cars while Erik Woods won the 25 lapper for a $500 cash prize.

With the field narrowed down to 26 starters, it was 2015 and 2017 champion Buddy Shepherd of Bakersfield earning fast-time and proceeding to win the redraw for the pole position. Shepherd started alongside Jarrett Gilmer, with Gilmer one of five Jr. Late Model graduates in the field.

Shepherd led early before facing a new foe in Lucas Oil Modified standout Linny White. White and Shepherd put on a side-by-side battling clinic that ran from laps 30 to lap 36 with the duo trading the lead on nearly every circuit. Shepherd had the lead by a nose when the caution flew on lap 36 for a severe crash on the backstretch involving Hollister’s Adam Lemke. The Jr. LM graduate tagged the backstretch wall head-on with Gilmer and Sheldon Cooper also suffering damage in the melee.

When racing resumed Shepherd maintained the lead with White following closely over a series of restarts. 2017 runner-up Logan Zampa of Napa was in and out of the pits multiple times during the stint before finally retiring from the race with mechanical woes.

A lap 51 attempt at a restart saw an accordion effect at the back of the field that ended Cooper and Racin Vernon’s evenings. The activity at the front of the field increased considerably from there onward, with seventh starting Erickson taking the lead. Erickson’s move to the front came in dramatic fashion when Shepherd slid up the hill in turn three and eventually fell back to fifth position.

Erickson looked poised for the checkered flag while numerous battles continued in two-by-two fashion for second. A caution on lap 73 for rookie Christian Roche tagging the backstretch wall brought the field together for a critical restart. Erickson and Shepherd each took turns with the lead before Erickson took over on lap 76.

A final caution on lap 77 for PCS Rookie of the Year Jack Wood spinning set up a three lap race to the finish. Erickson timed the restart well and managed to edge ahead of Shepherd and drive away for an exciting .155 second victory. Carlos Vieira stormed from 12th to finish third in his series debut with White and 2017 Rookie of the Year Austin Herzog rounding out the top-five.

The 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr. Late Models opened their third season of competition for drivers ages 10-16 years old and added a new face in the winner’s circle. Napa’s Dylan Zampa went to the front when it counted on lap 51 of the shortened 60 lap affair to take the crowd-pleasing victory.

Defending champion Jesse Love of Menlo Park qualified third but got an assist when he drew the pole for the main event. Fast time qualifier Tanner Reif of Las Vegas and Bakersfield’s Kabe McClenny battled for second position before a caution on lap 14 for a multi-car crash in turn one slowed the action. Anthony Guiamano and Calvin Hegje were both out of the race as a result.

McClenny restarted second while Reif restarted third and eventually fell to fourth when passed on the outside by 2017 third in points Austin Edwards in a later restart. Zampa started fifth and ran as low as seventh before chipping away at the pack. Zampa took away second from McClenny on lap 49 and two laps later did the same Love in a stirring set of passes. McClenny ended up passing Love a few laps later for second as well. Zampa started his 2018 season with a bang with the win with McClenny, Love, Reif, and Edwards the top-five. Third year drivers Lilly Mead and Jesse Burks staged a race long duel for sixth as well with Mead taking the position at the checkered flag.

A strong 11 car turnout highlighted the 30 lap main event for the Toyota Sedans, with a ten car inversion placing fast-time qualifier Dean Gould deep in the pack. Derek Suggan led the first half of the race before Jillaun Holden and Gould entered the mix. A late caution placed Holden and Gould side-by-side, and Gould took off for a scant two car length win over Holden. 2017 champion Mike Marley snookered Suggan for third as well.

The inaugural Mini Cups vs. Bandoleros race was dominated by Bakersfield drivers with young lady phenom Kercie Jung charging to a half lap victory in her Bandolero. The former Kern County Raceway Park champion had no trouble topping fellow Bando drivers Seth Wise and Riley Massey for the win. The Mini Cup half of the field had much more drama, with Avery Vivian and Bakersfield’s Kale McClenny racing in close quarters throughout the clean and green 20 lapper. McClenny made the winning move around the outside on the final lap of the race to get the Mini Cup win.

Racing continues at Madera Speedway next Saturday night with the Pacific Challenge Series presented by PenneyLawyers.com for a 75 lap Super Late Model race. The Western Winged Super Sprints, HPD Midgets, MST, 30 Lap Jr. Late Model Exhibition race, and F4 Beater Cross round out the card.
